Tools of the Trade: Jibber Jobber

With job searches becoming more involved and spread out over weeks or months it can be a pain to keep track of where you've applied to or who you're due to speak to next. Cue Jibber Jobber. It promises to be your virtual career organiser and take the pain out of job hunting.

It's a web based tool for managing you job search with the aim being to do away with old fashioned lists or spreadsheets. After adding the companies and any contacts you're targeting it'll monitor the status of each application from cover letters through to interviews and job offers.

You can also set actions and due dates so when an application date is nearing it'll give you a handy reminder. It's also ideal for chasing up feedback and the status of applications.

You can link to other web tools so if there's a particular company or contact you're keen to approach you can search your LinkedIn network for a contact who'll help you get a foot in the door. One great new feature is the Global Company list. This means you can see companies in your area that other Jibber Jobber users have added including contact details and direct links to their recruitment sites. A quick search revealed a number of related companies that wouldn't have sprung to mind in a hunt around the usual job boards and definitely worth applying to. The number of companies in some locations is light such as the UK (excluding London) but this will likely improve over time as more and more people use it. The location search for companies can be a little clunky with London divided into three separate sections.

For the stat addicts in you there's a reports section where you can analyse things such as the number of applications along side the number of interviews for example. There's even an expense tracker. And if you need a little guidance in your career planning there's an option to nominate a coach and have them log into a section of your account to provide feedback and check up on how you're doing.

There's a free option available which allows access to most of the functionality and a trial of the premium version. One downside of both the free and silver version is that they only allow one contact at each prospective company. If you're keen to work at a particular place and applying for multiple jobs there you may need to upgrade to the premium version but with that costing $10 a month it's not much of a problem.

Jibber Jobber is definitely a heavy weight when it comes to tools to manage job search. It's easy to use and includes lots of functionality which is going to be invaluable in tracking your next career move.
